How to Care for Your Reglazed Surface

Everything you need to know to protect your refinished tub, tile, or sink — and keep it looking brand new for years to come.

Reglazing is one of the most cost-effective ways to restore a worn tub, tile, or sink to like-new condition — without the expense or disruption of a full replacement. But once your surface has been professionally refinished, how you care for it makes all the difference.

At JP Glazing, we've refinished thousands of surfaces across Eastern Massachusetts, and the most common reason a finish wears prematurely isn't time — it's using the wrong cleaning products. This guide covers everything you need to know to protect your investment.

What Is Reglazing?

Reglazing (also called refinishing or resurfacing) is a process where a specialized coating is applied directly over your existing tub, tile, or sink. The result is a smooth, glossy finish that looks and feels brand new. It's a fraction of the cost of replacement — and it's ready to use within 24–48 hours. Because the finish is a coating rather than the original porcelain or acrylic, it requires some care to maintain. The good news: it's simple. You just need to know what to use — and what to avoid.

What You Can Safely Use

Cleaning a reglazed surface is easy. Stick to gentle, non-abrasive tools and mild liquid cleaners, and your finish will stay pristine.

Safe Cleaning Tools

Always use soft, non-scratching tools. These won't damage the coating and are all you need for routine cleaning:

Soft cloth or microfiber towel — ideal for daily wipe-downs after use.

Non-abrasive sponge — great for gentle scrubbing without scratching.

Safe Cleaning Products

The following products are safe for reglazed surfaces when used as directed:

  • Mild dish soap— a small amount diluted in warm water is perfectly safe and very effective for routine cleaning.

  • Scrubbing Bubbles— a widely available bathroom cleaner that works well without damaging the finish.

  • Magic Eraser (wet, no scrubbing)— can be used gently on stubborn spots, but do not scrub hard or use it dry.

What to Avoid — And Why

This is the most important section of this guide. Many common household cleaners will permanently damage a reglazed finish. They may look clean at first, but they gradually dull, pit, or peel the coating.

✓ SAFE TO USE

  • Soft cloth or microfiber towel

  • Non-abrasive sponge

  • Mild dish soap

  • Scrubbing Bubbles

  • Magic Eraser (wet only)

✕ NEVER USE

  • Comet, Ajax, Bon Ami

  • Steel wool or abrasive pads

  • Bleach or Clorox Cleanup

  • CLR, Lime-A-Way, Tilex, ZEP

  • Drano or Liquid-Plumr

  • Acetone or nail polish remover

  • Car wax or silicone sprays

  • Suction cup accessories

  • Bath bombs

  • Hair dye

Why Are These Products So Harmful?

Abrasive cleaners and pads (Comet, Ajax, steel wool, scouring sponges) physically scratch and wear away the coating. Even a few uses can cause visible dulling and micro-scratches that trap grime and accelerate deterioration.

Bleach-based products (straight bleach, Clorox Cleanup, bleach sprays) chemically break down the coating's bond over time, leading to peeling and discoloration.

Harsh chemical cleaners (Tilex, ZEP, CLR, Lime-A-Way, drain cleaners) are formulated to dissolve mineral deposits, soap scum, and organic matter — but they don't discriminate. They'll dissolve or lift the reglazed coating too.

⚠️ SPECIAL WARNING: BATH BOMBS & HAIR DYE

Bath bombs contain dyes and chemicals that will permanently stain the reglazed finish — this damage is not reversible. Hair dye can also permanently stain the surface; if accidental contact occurs, rinse the surface immediately with warm water.

Suction cup accessories (soap holders, shelves, bath mats) create intense localized pressure on the finish. When removed, they can pull the coating away from the surface, especially in corners or along edges.

Building a Simple Cleaning Routine

The best way to maintain a reglazed surface is to clean it regularly with gentle products rather than occasionally with harsh ones. Here's a simple routine:

  • After each use, do a quick wipe-down with a soft cloth to remove soap residue and water. This is the single most effective thing you can do.

  • For weekly cleaning, apply a small amount of mild dish soap to a damp non-abrasive sponge and gently wipe the entire surface.

  • Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a microfiber towel to prevent water spots.

  • For stubborn soap scum buildup, apply Scrubbing Bubbles, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe away gently — no scrubbing required.

💡 Pro tip: Keeping a small squeegee in your shower to wipe down the walls after each use dramatically reduces soap scum buildup and keeps your finish looking cleaner for longer.
